About The Academy of Tango – Texas
The Academy of Tango – Texas is a 501 (c)(3) non-profit in the State of Texas whose charter is to promote the art, history and culture of the Argentine Tango. The founders – Juan Carlos and Alicia Suarez – met dancing the tango in Buenos Aires, and have been lifelong “tangueros”. In 1995, Juan Carlos was honored by the Academia Nacional del Tango de la Republica Argentina (The National Academy of Tango – Argentina) with a certification designating him as its worldwide representative (or “Correspondiente”). Juan Carlos and Alicia have both spent years to help promote greater awareness and interest in the Argentine Tango, and in 2010, they formed the Academy of Tango – Texas.
Through their work at the Academy, Juan Carlos and Alicia have brought dignified guests from Argentina, including poets, musicians, artists, dancers and historians to share the history and culture of Argentine Tango during our annual “Day of Tango” festival. The Day of Tango festival in Austin, TX has been highly rated by attendees and is celebrating its 7th year with world-class tango performances, live music and milonga social dancing during the weekend of December 8-9-10, 2017.
The Academy encourages all prospective Tangueros to visit the birthplace of Tango by providing information and suggested itineraries for Buenos Aires, Argentina. We also organize trips for students and academy members and supporters to Buenos Aires, offering them the opportunity to visit the Academia Nacional del Tango, attend Tango shows and dances, and experience unique aspects of the Argentine culture.
If you’re interested in supporting the art, history and culture of the Argentine Tango, please consider donating to the Academy of Tango – Texas. Or support us at the Day of Tango festival this year in Austin!
